Positive Behavior Support (PBS)
Do you know about the Wiley Way?
What is Positive Behavior Support?
- The Positive Behavior Support process assists adults in improving overall classroom and school climate to achieve higher academic performance for all students.
- This is achieved through assisting schools in developing school-wide positive behavior support plans, professional development on best practices, working with teachers to master strategies, and providing assistance in developing behavior plans for groups of students and individual students.
- PBS has been implemented nationwide and is showing wonderful initial results for the last three years in Wake County Schools.
What Is Happening at Wiley?
Expected behaviors and procedures are defined, taught, practiced, and reinforced. A team of staff members meets regularly to determine effectiveness of processes and to study data collected. A PBS Coach from Student Support Services works with our school to guide and support our implementation.
Wiley is beginning its second year of PBS implementation. Specific expectations and procedures for cafeteria, hallways, stairwells, ramps, and playground have been developed and taught to students. When demonstrating expectations, students can earn either whole class or individual “Globetrotter Cards”. These cards are collected by class, and when goals are met, various reinforcements are provided to the class. The students are enjoying being successful and the staff is enjoying focusing on positive behaviors!
